This work delves into the understanding and teachings of the Holy Spirit in the Gospel and the First Epistle of John. In contrast to the Synoptic Gospels, John employs distinct terms like Paraclete and Spirit of Truth to refer to the Holy Spirit. The use of these terms and their associated meanings reflect the social and historical experiences of the Johannine community, which in turn shape Johannine pneumatology and the community's self-perception within the broader social context.
The community’s experience of being excommunicated from the synagogue led them to view themselves as chosen and anointed, while a subsequent divide within the community described in the first epistle deepened their conviction of belonging to the truth. These experiences contributed to the establishment and preservation of a community that sees itself as separate from the world and other Christian groups, yet maintains an evangelistic attitude toward them.
This self-perception of the Johannine community, viewed through the lens of their understanding of the Spirit-Paraclete, is significant for developing a holistic biblical spirituality that is essential for any faith community. This book seeks to illustrate that the concept of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth serves as a foundation from which individuals or communities can re-evaluate their faith and spiritual practices.
